At dinner, Clara asked, “Did Harper behave?”

“She was perfect,” I said.

“No tantrums? No emotional scenes?”

Harper’s fingers tightened around her fork. “No, Mom.”

It was a lie, and we both knew it. But I understood then that Harper was surviving by silence, and if I wanted to protect her, I could not charge blindly at Clara. I had to learn the rules of her game.
