My Husband Sent Me Away on Christmas Eve for His “Real Family.” At Midnight, He Saw Me on the News—and Realized He Had Made a Terrible Mistake.

1. The Christmas Eve My Husband Asked Me to Disappear

That morning, I was standing in my kitchen, stirring cranberry sauce, when my husband told me I shouldn’t be home for Christmas.

At first, I laughed.

David had a dry sense of humor, and I thought he was trying to tease me.

Then I saw his face.

“The kids’ real mother is coming,” he said, placing his coffee mug on the counter. “It’ll just be easier if you aren’t around.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Outside, snow drifted across the garden. The Christmas tree sparkled in the living room. Six plates sat on the dining table, surrounded by candles and little gold napkin rings.

I had spent weeks planning that evening.

Sarah, David’s ex-wife, was coming for dinner. I had personally invited her because I knew how much Christmas meant to Ethan and Chloe, David’s children.

I had even bought Sarah a cashmere scarf.

And now my husband was asking me to leave the house so his former wife could celebrate Christmas with him.

“Did Ethan ask you to tell me this?” I asked.

“No.”

“Did Chloe?”

David stared into his coffee.

I nodded slowly.

“So this is your idea.”

“I’m trying to make things comfortable for everyone, Claire.”

“Everyone except your wife.”

He sighed as if I were being unreasonable.

“It’s one evening. Don’t blow it out of proportion.”

I looked toward the dining room.

The house had belonged to me long before David entered my life. My father had helped me buy it, and later placed it in a family trust to protect it.

David had always called the arrangement unnecessary paperwork.

I had never changed it.

Now, standing in the kitchen, I finally understood why my father had insisted that I protect the things I had built before marriage.

Because sometimes, the person who promises to love you is also the person who eventually asks you to leave.
