Clayton made one phone call from the parking lot.<\/p>\n

His younger brother, Mason, answered from his body shop in Arlington.<\/p>\n

\u201cClay? What\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI need you to call your friend at the county office. The one who handles emergency family cases.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mason went quiet.<\/p>\n

Clayton gave him the hospital name, the room number, the boy\u2019s name, and the stepfather\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

When Clayton returned to room 214, Evan was still staring at the television.<\/p>\n

Clayton sat down.<\/p>\n

For the next hour, they watched cartoons neither of them cared about. Evan barely touched his dinner tray. Clayton did not ask too many questions.<\/p>\n

Sometimes safety begins with silence.<\/p>\n

The Doctor Who Wanted Him Gone<\/h1>\n

At 6:10 p.m., a hospital supervisor appeared in the doorway.<\/p>\n

Her name badge read Denise Harper.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, you need to leave this room.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clayton looked up calmly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m visiting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clayton turned to Evan.<\/p>\n

Evan shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clayton looked back at Denise.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe says I can stay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Her face hardened.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, a doctor arrived. Dr. Alan Whitcomb was polished, silver-haired, and clearly accustomed to being obeyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Rourke, this is a medical facility. You have no authorized reason to be here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sitting with a kid who asked me to stay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis child has a legal guardian.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThen call the police and explain why you\u2019re rushing him out before anyone reviews what happened.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Whitcomb\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are interfering with discharge.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clayton leaned back in the chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, doctor. I\u2019m waiting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Stepdad at the Door<\/h1>\n

Trevor Baines arrived at 6:27.<\/p>\n

He looked ordinary at first glance. Work jacket. Clean boots. Close-cut hair. A man who might help a neighbor fix a fence.<\/p>\n

But when he saw Clayton sitting beside Evan\u2019s bed, his face changed.<\/p>\n

Only for a second.<\/p>\n

But Clayton saw it.<\/p>\n

Clayton stood slowly.<\/p>\n

Not close. Not threatening. Just standing.<\/p>\n

Trevor\u2019s eyes moved to Clayton\u2019s leather vest, then back to his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a family matter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Evan whispered from the bed.<\/p>\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n
