She was dedicated to her grandparents and sacrificed her future to look after them but all they left her was an old umbrella. But there was something hidden in it.<\/p>\n

Lesley, George, and Wilson Farrel\u2019s parents had died in a car crash when they were children, and their grandparents stepped forward to raise them. George had been eleven, Wilson nine, and Lesley just five.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Their grandparents had carefully stretched their parent\u2019s insurance money to pay for the older boys\u2019 education, but when it was time for Lesley to go to college, her grandmother became very ill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There was no way Lesley was going to turn her back on her beloved grandparents, so she enrolled in the local community college and attended classes when she could.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Unfortunately, her grandmother passed away, but Wilson and George didn\u2019t come to the funeral. They sent regrets and flowers, but they were clearly not interested in taking on responsibility for the man who\u2019d raised them.<\/p>\n

So Lesley took care of her grandfather, and when two years later she met William and decided to get married, she moved into a small house down the street. She continued to cook and care for her grandfather right up until his last days.<\/p>\n

At no time did her brothers, now both wealthy successful men, ever ask if she or her grandfather needed help, financial or otherwise. \u201cIt\u2019s not that we need them,\u201d Lesley told her husband, \u201cbut it just shows such ingratitude!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy grandparents were in their seventies and they took on three kids. Instead of enjoying their retirement, they took on the work and responsibility and my brothers don\u2019t seem to care!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHun,\u201d William said tenderly, \u201cwhat goes around comes around. God\u2019s justice moves slowly but it never fails!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lesley shook her head. \u201cI don\u2019t believe that!\u201d she said. \u201cThey are nasty ungrateful men and we are struggling, how is that justice?\u201d But William just shook his head and told her to be patient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lesley\u2019s grandfather became frailer and frailer, until the sad day when she came in to bring him breakfast and found that he\u2019d passed away in his sleep. Lesley was devastated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She called her brothers and distant family and made the arrangements for the funeral. She thought her brothers wouldn\u2019t come to her grandfather\u2019s funeral but they surprised her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said Wilson. \u201cEspecially if we market it as a potential bed & breakfast!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But the lawyer shook his head. \u201cI\u2019m afraid your grandfather has left the house and its contents to the Children\u2019s Association,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a shelter for at-risk children.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d cried Wilson angrily. \u201cWhat about US?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said George, \u201cWe\u2019re his flesh and blood! Didn\u2019t he care about our welfare?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cStop it!\u201d cried Lesley. \u201cGrandpa did everything he could for us, everything! It\u2019s his house, and it was his right to dispose of it as he wished.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The lawyer said, \u201cYour grandfather did leave some tokens of his affection,\u201d he said, and he placed an ornate silver pocket watch, a silver chain with an antique cross, and an old dark green umbrella on the table.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Wilson picked up the pocket watch greedily. \u201cThe old man was holding out on us!\u201d he said. \u201cThis watch is from the time of the Civil War. It might be worth something!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAs per your grandfather\u2019s instructions, you will each choose an item according to your age: so George, you choose first, then Wilson, then Lesley,\u201d the lawyer explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Wilson frowned crossly as George picked up the pocket watch, then he stepped forward and claimed the silver cross. \u201cLooks like you get the umbrella, Lesley!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lesley picked up the umbrella and touched the heavy wooden handle lovingly. \u201cThis was grandpa\u2019s favorite, you know. He said it was the best for a rainy day!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

George laughed cruelly. \u201cLet\u2019s hope it still works,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s raining now!\u201d Lesley peered outside. It was pouring!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIn that case, this umbrella is just perfect,\u201d Lesley said and walked to the front door. She opened the door and unfurled the umbrella and something fluttered down and stuck in her hair, then something else\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lesley stared in astonishment as dozens of bills fell out of the folds of the old umbrella. Geoge scoffed. \u201cSo that was the old man\u2019s rainy day fund?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lesley picked up a note and gasped. \u201cThis is a $1000 bill! I\u2019d never seen one before!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Wilson stepped forward and bent to pick up a bill but the lawyer stopped him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe umbrella and its contents belong to your sister,\u201d he said coldly. \u201cYou and your brother made your choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

George was furious. \u201cBut there are dozens of $1000 bills! That\u2019s a lot of money!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lesley was looking at the bills closely. \u201cThey look brand new as if they\u2019ve just been printed!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYour grandfather and your great-grandfather collected those bills for decades, Lesley, up until they were withdrawn from circulation in the late 1960s,\u201d the lawyer said. \u201cThese mint-condition bills are collector\u2019s items. They are each worth between $10,000 and $12,000\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lesley was stunned! Her grandfather had left her a valuable legacy after all. With the money from the sale of the bills, she and William paid off their house, bought a new car, and started their own rainy day fund.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Lesley\u2019s grandfather\u2019s old house became a shelter and helped many sad and lonely children find happiness.
