Her voice shook, but she kept going. &#8220;We saw the assistance forms you refused.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Denise&#8217;s softness vanished.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You had no right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>Denise froze.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;I had every right to ask where my money went,&#8221; Hannah said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I looked at her then.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Denise crossed her arms. &#8220;I was sick. I was alone. I needed my daughter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You needed control,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Help is a ride to an appointment. Help is filling out forms. Help is paying a verified bill. What you wanted was a frightened girl with a monthly deposit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You had her whole childhood,&#8221; Denise snapped.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I needed my daughter.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You left her whole childhood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Her eyes flashed. &#8220;I gave her life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You gave her a birth certificate,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Don&#8217;t confuse that with motherhood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Denise gave a bitter laugh. &#8220;Saint Ruby. Always waiting to take my place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;I never took your place,&#8221; I said. &#8220;I filled the one you left empty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Denise turned to Hannah. &#8220;If you walk out, don&#8217;t come back when she gets tired of you. Without your father, she&#8217;ll probably leave you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I gave her life.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Look at me, Hannah,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Not at her fear. Look at me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hannah&#8217;s eyes found mine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s what you do,&#8221; Hannah told Denise. &#8220;You make love sound like a door that&#8217;s always about to close.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Denise&#8217;s face hardened. &#8220;I&#8217;m your mother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re my mother,&#8221; Hannah said, her voice shaking. &#8220;But Ruby is my mom.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Look at me.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For once, Denise had nothing ready.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hannah pulled out her phone. Academic probation for one term. Counseling. Adviser meetings. A campus job.
