Just enough.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enough to know that Daniel and his mother had been talking about me after they thought I was asleep.<\/li>\n<li>Enough to know my name had been mentioned alongside phrases like <em>\u201cshe doesn\u2019t need to know yet\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201conce everything is combined.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Enough to know there was a plan.<\/li>\n<li>And enough to know I wasn\u2019t supposed to discover it this soon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I locked my phone screen and slipped it into my pocket. Daniel\u2019s face tightened; Norma looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard enough,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke. The refrigerator hummed. Outside, a dog barked somewhere down the street. Then Norma straightened her shoulders. For fifty-three days I had been accommodating. For fifty-three days I had adjusted. For fifty-three days I had listened to explanations that somehow always required me to give more.<\/p>\n<p>I was finished.<\/p>\n<p>Norma crossed her arms. \u201cYou\u2019re being dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That almost made me smile. The woman who had just demanded I pay every bill in a house she called hers was accusing me of drama. I looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns this house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house. Who owns it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them answered. I already knew why. The deed was in Daniel\u2019s father\u2019s old trust. After his death, ownership had transferred jointly to Daniel and Norma. Not me. Never me. I had checked three weeks ago, the moment I realized every conversation about \u201cfamily\u201d somehow excluded legal paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo,\u201d I continued, \u201cyou want me to pay for a property I don\u2019t own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norma\u2019s lips pressed into a thin line. \u201cYou\u2019re Daniel\u2019s wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that means contributing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded slowly. \u201cGreat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, hope flashed across Daniel\u2019s face. Then I said, \u201cI\u2019ll contribute to my own house.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Shift<\/h3>\n<p>The hope vanished instantly. That was when I knew. Not suspected\u2014<em>knew<\/em>. Because a husband who loved his wife would have been happy she owned a home outright. Proud, even. Daniel looked terrified. The difference mattered. A lot.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes darted toward his mother, and hers darted toward him. The look lasted less than a second, but it was enough. They were sharing a secret. A real one. Something bigger than utility bills. Something bigger than groceries.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my pulse slow. That always happened when things became clear. People think clarity feels emotional, but it doesn\u2019t. It feels cold.
