The Ride To Mercy General<\/h1>\n

People turned to stare as Andrew hurried from the alley with the small child in his arms and Lily running barefoot beside him. His driver opened the door before Andrew even reached the SUV.<\/p>\n

\u201cMercy General,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Andrew said.\u00a0\u201cFast, but careful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inside the car, Lily climbed in and sat stiffly, her knees pressed together, her little hands clenched in her lap. Andrew slipped off his wool coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.<\/p>\n

She looked at him as if kindness were a trick she had not yet learned how to escape.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs Rosie still breathing?\u201d<\/strong> she asked.<\/p>\n

So that was the toddler\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

Andrew looked down and counted the tiny rise and fall of Rosie\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.\u00a0\u201cShe\u2019s still breathing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lily nodded, but she did not relax.\u00a0\u201cShe gets thirsty when she wakes up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andrew swallowed hard.\u00a0\u201cThen we\u2019ll make sure someone helps her with that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The hospital doors opened before the SUV had fully stopped. Two nurses and a pediatric doctor were already waiting with a stretcher. The smell of sanitizer hit Andrew so hard he nearly stumbled, but he kept moving. This time, he would not freeze in a hallway. This time, there was still something to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo-year-old girl,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he told the doctor.\u00a0\u201cName is Rosie. Weak pulse. Very cold. Older sister says she wouldn\u2019t wake this morning. No guardian present.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lily stood in Andrew\u2019s coat under the bright white lights, looking unbearably small.<\/p>\n

A nurse crouched in front of her.\u00a0\u201cHoney, can you tell me your sister\u2019s full name?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cRosie Parker,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Lily whispered.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m Lily Parker.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Names mattered. Andrew had learned that long ago. A name turned a case into a child. A child into someone who belonged to the world.<\/p>\n

As the medical team rolled Rosie through a set of swinging doors, Lily tried to follow, but a nurse gently stopped her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going to help her first,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the nurse said.\u00a0\u201cYou can see her soon.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lily looked up at Andrew.\u00a0\u201cDo I have to pay before they start?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The question landed in him like a stone.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Andrew said.\u00a0\u201cYou don\u2019t have to pay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut I told you I would when I\u2019m grown.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He crouched in front of her.\u00a0\u201cI believe you meant it. But children don\u2019t owe adults money for helping them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lily looked unsure, as though the idea contradicted every lesson life had taught her.<\/p>\n

The Folded Paper<\/h1>\n

Within an hour, the hospital hallway filled with quiet urgency. A social worker arrived with kind eyes and a clipboard. A security officer stood nearby, not threatening, simply present. Nurses moved in and out of Rosie\u2019s room with bags of fluid, warm blankets, and careful faces.<\/p>\n

Andrew signed the financial responsibility form without asking the amount, but when the social worker began explaining procedure, he listened.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Caldwell,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0she said,\u00a0\u201cwe\u2019ll need to document exactly how you found the children. We also need to contact child services and locate any relatives.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDo whatever needs to be done,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Andrew replied.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m not trying to get around the process.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

She studied him for a moment, then nodded.\u00a0\u201cGood. The process is what protects them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lily sat in a plastic chair, wrapped in Andrew\u2019s coat and a hospital blanket. Someone gave her crackers and a carton of milk. She held them carefully but did not eat.<\/p>\n

\u201cRosie first,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRosie is being helped,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Andrew told her.\u00a0\u201cYou need help too.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

That seemed to confuse her.<\/p>\n

The social worker asked where they had been staying. Lily answered in pieces. A laundromat when it was very cold. Behind a diner when the owner had already left. Under a covered church entrance one night when snow came down softly and Rosie would not stop shaking.<\/p>\n

She spoke without drama, the way another child might describe a school bus route.<\/p>\n

Then the social worker noticed Lily shifting her foot.<\/p>\n
