It disappeared from the Hawthorn Lane property approximately twelve hours before the sale was finalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned to Mom, disbelief on his face. \u201cYou told me the place was cleared out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you to leave it alone,\u201d Mom snapped.<\/p>\n<p>The entire table flinched.<\/p>\n<p>The woman marshal\u2019s attention returned to me. \u201cMiss Carter, witnesses place your car near the property this week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whipped his head toward me. \u201cYou went there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I should have lied. You used that statement to expedite access and bypass dispute delays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was advised to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Then my mother did something I had never seen her do.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>She pointed at Neil.<\/p>\n<p>My stepfather went pale. \u201cKaren\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said, voice shaking but firm. \u201cNo more protecting anyone. He pushed Daniel to sell it quickly. He kept saying we had to close before the Marshals came back with another warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voices erupted across the table.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel half-rose, staring at Neil. \u201cYou said the warrant was old. You said they\u2019d already taken what they needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neil didn\u2019t look afraid\u2014he looked furious. Furious that the secret was slipping. \u201cThis is not the place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bearded marshal stepped closer. \u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neil jumped to his feet. Chairs scraped. My aunt screamed.
