“He died protecting us.”
I watched from the back row, already preparing myself for the inevitable.
I expected to see Scarlett receive the flag.
I expected another round of speeches about Garrett’s courage.
I expected to endure one final humiliation before taking my children home.
Instead, something impossible happened.
General Bradley never stopped.
He didn’t slow down.
He didn’t acknowledge Scarlett.
He simply walked past her.
Straight past her outstretched hands.
Straight past the front row.
Straight past Garrett’s parents.
For several seconds, nobody understood what they were seeing.
Scarlett remained frozen in place, standing alone in the rain with her hands extended toward empty air.
A collective gasp spread through the crowd.
Camera shutters exploded into action.
“General!”
Beatrice’s voice cracked across the cemetery.
