My Daughter-in-Law Refused to Pay for My Sick Wife’s $24 Soup on Mother’s Day. My Son Agreed. Then the Restaurant Manager Revealed Who Had Really Been Paying Their Bills…

I never imagined that Mother’s Day would become the day I discovered exactly what kind of man my son had become.

My name is Robert Mitchell. I’m 72 years old, retired, and I’ve been married to my wife, Eleanor, for 46 years.

We raised two children, worked hard, paid our bills, and tried to teach them that family meant standing together when life became difficult.

Our son, Daniel, was our pride and joy.

At least, he used to be.

For the past year, Eleanor had been fighting several serious health problems. Some days she could barely walk from the bedroom to the kitchen. Her appetite had disappeared, and even sitting through a meal could exhaust her.

That’s why, on Mother’s Day, I wanted to do something special.

I reserved a table at an upscale restaurant downtown. Nothing extravagant, but somewhere Eleanor could enjoy a quiet afternoon without worrying about cooking or cleaning.

Daniel and his wife, Vanessa, agreed to join us.

Vanessa arrived wearing a designer handbag and a gold bracelet that probably cost more than my first car.

She barely greeted Eleanor.

Instead, she complained that the restaurant’s parking was inconvenient and that our table wasn’t close enough to the window.

I ignored it.

Eleanor smiled when she saw the menu.

“Everything looks wonderful,” she whispered.

But after studying it for several minutes, she ordered a small bowl of soup for $24.

Her medication had been upsetting her stomach, and she didn’t want to risk ordering something she couldn’t finish.

I ordered a steak.

Daniel ordered seafood.

Vanessa ordered a lobster dish, two cocktails, and an expensive dessert before the main course had even arrived.

I didn’t mind.

I had invited them.
