When my aunt Linda called to say she was planning a “special trip” for Grandma’s retirement, I thought it was sweet and a little surprising.

Linda isn’t known for follow-through unless there’s a photo op, but I wanted to believe her.

“Mom deserves a real vacation. A week by the ocean, all expenses paid!”

she announced over speakerphone.

I was on my lunch break at the hospital, eating yogurt and scrolling patient notes.

“That’s kind of you,”

I said.

“She’ll love it.”

Linda and her family weren’t close to Grandma unless they needed something — a borrowed check, babysitting, then months of silence.
