I stopped reading.
There was another page.
And at the bottom, my father had written a name.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Rebecca Collins.
I slowly raised my eyes toward my attorney.
“Why is your name in my father’s letter?”
Rebecca didn’t move.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the page.
Then she closed her briefcase.
“Eleanor, I can explain.”
My stomach dropped.
“Explain what?”
She looked toward Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
Finally, she turned back to me.
“Your father didn’t hire Marcus to protect you. He hired my father.”
I blinked.
“What?”
“My father was Richard’s attorney. He created the trust. And he discovered something shortly before Richard died.”
“What did he discover?”
Rebecca took a slow breath.
“Someone had already been withdrawing money from the family trust for years. Someone with access to the original documents.”
I felt sick.
“Who?”
She looked at Marcus.
He shook his head.
“No. Don’t do this.”
Rebecca continued.
“The withdrawals began before you and Marcus married. And the person who authorized them wasn’t your husband.”
She placed another document on the table.
A document bearing my mother’s signature.
My mother had died believing my father left me financially secure.
But according to the records, she had known about the missing money.
And she had signed a statement naming the person responsible.
I stared at the signature.
Then I noticed the date.
It was written just three days before her death.
“Who did she name?” I whispered.
Rebecca turned the document toward me.
My breath caught.
The name wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was Clara Vance.
My own daughter.
I shook my head immediately.
“That’s impossible. Clara was three years old when my mother died.”
Rebecca’s expression softened.
“That’s why I think we need to look at the original records before drawing conclusions.”
Then Marcus spoke.
His voice was almost inaudible.
“Clara isn’t your mother’s granddaughter by blood, Eleanor.”
I stared at him.
“What did you just say?”
He looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa began to cry.
Because the truth was suddenly much worse than an affair, a stolen company, or a hidden inheritance.

I reached for my phone.
I called Clara.
She answered on the fourth ring.
“Mom? Is everything okay?”
I looked at Marcus, Vanessa, and Rebecca.
Then I asked the question that would change our family forever.
“Clara, sweetheart, there’s something about the day you were born that I need you to tell me.”
There was a long silence.
Then my daughter whispered:
“Mom… who told you?”
And before I could answer, I heard a man’s voice in the background.
A voice I hadn’t heard since my father died.
“Eleanor, don’t believe a word they tell you. Your father is alive.”
The call went dead.
