Kelsey whispered, “I can’t afford expensive programs.”

“Then we need to look at the actual numbers and figure out what is possible.”

Grant rubbed his forehead.

“We can’t organize everything before Thursday.”

“Then why did you wait until Monday to tell me?”

Neither answered.

I leaned back.

“You had weeks to prepare. You just decided I didn’t need to be part of the conversation.”

Grant looked toward the spreadsheet.

“You can’t change the plan now.”

I stared at him.

“Why not?”

“Because Kelsey already accepted the position. Her flight is booked. Everything’s arranged.”

I folded my hands.

“Then you should have confirmed childcare before promising that everything was arranged.”

He looked genuinely stunned.

As though it had never occurred to him that I might refuse.

“I am not going to become Ruby and Finn’s automatic caregiver while their mother lives in another state,” I said firmly. “I’ll help you work out a safe alternative. But I won’t sacrifice ten weeks of my work and personal life to fulfill a promise I never made.”

Kelsey covered her mouth.

Grant stood silently.

Then he asked, “Why are you only objecting now?”

I looked directly at him.

“Because this is the first time either of you has actually given me a chance to answer.”

The following morning, Grant barely spoke to me.

He made coffee, kissed Toby goodbye, and left for work without our usual conversation.

Kelsey avoided eye contact.

I wasn’t happy about the tension.

But I wasn’t going to apologize for refusing responsibilities I’d never agreed to accept.

Around lunchtime, Kelsey knocked on my bedroom door.

Her eyes were red.

“Can we talk?”

I closed my laptop.

“Of course.”

She sat in the chair beside my desk.

“When I first found the Denver job, I almost didn’t apply.”

I waited.

“I told Grant it was too far away. I couldn’t afford to move the kids immediately, and I didn’t have money for an apartment deposit.”

“Okay.”

“He encouraged me to apply anyway.”

That wasn’t surprising.

Grant had always been protective of his younger sister.

“He told me we’d find a solution for Ruby and Finn.”

I looked at her.

“What exactly did he say?”

Kelsey twisted her hands together.

“He said you were already taking care of them most afternoons.”

My stomach tightened.

“He said you enjoyed having them around and were comfortable handling their routines.”

“I do enjoy being with them,” I replied. “But that isn’t the same as agreeing to care for them every day.”

She nodded.

“I know that now.”

“Did Grant actually tell you I’d agreed?”

She looked down.

“He said not to worry.”

I remained quiet.

Kelsey wiped her eyes.

“He thought you’d be upset if we brought it up too early. He said you tend to worry about all the details.”

I stared at her.

“He told you that?”

“Yes.”

“And you accepted it?”

“I thought he’d handle the conversation.”

“What happened when you realized he hadn’t?”

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t want to lose the opportunity.”

There it was.

Not a simple misunderstanding.

Not a forgotten conversation.

They’d been afraid I might refuse, so they delayed asking until they believed changing the plan would be too difficult.

“I’m sorry,” Kelsey whispered.

I handed her a tissue.

“I want you to succeed. I really do. But I have to protect my job too.”

“I understand.”

“And Ruby and Finn need a proper arrangement. They shouldn’t have to live for ten weeks wondering whether everyone will somehow make things work.”

She nodded.

After she left, I sat quietly for a while.

Then I remembered an older email thread attached to the scheduling spreadsheet.

I opened it.

There were messages from three weeks earlier.

In one, Kelsey had expressed concern about leaving the children.

Grant’s response was brief.

**“Leave Megan to me.”**

I stared at those words.

Another message showed Kelsey asking whether he was certain I would agree.

Grant had reassured her that he would handle the situation.

I finally understood why he’d been so dismissive whenever I’d mentioned the extra responsibilities.

He hadn’t been surprised by any of them.

He’d been counting on me to continue.

That evening, after the children went upstairs, I showed him the messages.

He read them without speaking.

“Is this true?” I asked.

He placed the phone on the table.

“Yes.”

“You told Kelsey I would take care of her children?”

“I told her we’d help.”

“No, Grant. You told her I would do it.”

He looked exhausted.

“I didn’t think it would turn into such a big argument.”

I stared at him.

“You committed me to ten weeks of childcare without telling me. What did you think would happen?”

“I thought you’d understand once you realized how important the job was.”

“After she’d accepted the offer?”

He didn’t respond.

“After she’d booked the flight?”

Silence.

“After you’d already given the school my contact information?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I knew you might be upset initially. I thought you’d eventually agree.”

Suddenly, my frustration gave way to something worse.

Disappointment.

“You didn’t ask because you knew I might say no.”

Grant looked at me.

“You probably would have.”

“Maybe.”

He spread his hands.

“See?”

“No, Grant. That’s the entire point.”

My voice trembled.

“You were afraid I’d refuse, so you waited until saying no would make me look like the person ruining everything.”

He didn’t answer.

I slid the phone toward him.

“You didn’t promise your sister your help. You promised her mine.”

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Kelsey appeared in the doorway.

“I called the company,” she said quietly.

I turned toward her.

“They can postpone my start date by one week. That’s all.”

It was more flexibility than she’d expected.

“That’s a beginning,” I said.

She looked toward Grant.

“I’ll try to find an apartment quickly. But I can’t bring the kids until I have somewhere suitable.”

Grant nodded.

“We’ll work it out.”

I looked at him.

“Who’s we?”

For the first time, he didn’t immediately look toward me for the solution.

By Thursday morning, Grant had made more childcare-related phone calls in two days than he’d made during the previous six weeks.

He contacted the school district.

Two after-school programs.

Several childcare providers.

His supervisor.

Kelsey’s employer.

And the school office to correct the emergency contact information.

He didn’t enjoy any of it.

Neither had I when I’d been doing those tasks.

But at least he was finally taking responsibility.

On Wednesday afternoon, he came home carrying a yellow notepad covered with information.

“The school has an after-school program with two available places,” he told me.

“That’s promising.”

“It stays open until six.”

“That could work.”

He hesitated.

“It’s expensive.”

“How much?”

He told me the weekly amount.

His expression suggested he was genuinely shocked.

“That’s for both children?”

“Yes.”

“Every week?”

“Every week.”

He sat down.

“How do parents afford this?”

“Some families struggle tremendously,” I replied.

For the first time, we were discussing what childcare actually cost instead of pretending it was free because I happened to work from home.

Grant had spoken with Kelsey about contributing from her new salary.

He would help cover the remaining amount during the transition, using money from our household budget that we’d actually discussed together.

That detail mattered.

He’d asked before committing our money.

Kelsey had also begun searching seriously for apartments in Denver.

Her employer had sent information about nearby rentals, and she arranged several viewings.

The new goal was for Ruby and Finn to join her within four weeks.

Four weeks still felt like a long separation for young children.

But this time, Grant agreed to assume responsibility for their daily care.

Kelsey would remain responsible for their medical decisions and expenses.

The school would receive accurate information about the temporary arrangement.

And if the arrangements couldn’t be confirmed before her departure, Kelsey would have to revise her plans again.

There would be no more guessing.

Thursday morning became Grant’s first real test.

I had an early work meeting, so he was responsible for getting all three children ready.

At 7:05, I heard him calling from downstairs.

“Finn, where are your shoes?”

“I don’t know!”

“You wore them yesterday!”

“I don’t know where they are!”

A few minutes later, Grant shouted upstairs.

“Megan, where do we keep the lunch containers?”

“Bottom cabinet, left side!”

“Thanks!”

Five minutes passed.

“Does Ruby buy lunch on Thursdays?”

I closed my eyes.

“Ask Ruby.”

A moment later, I heard him repeat the question.

“No, Uncle Grant,” Ruby answered. “I need a packed lunch. I already told you.”

There was a pause.

“Okay. What would you like?”

Despite everything, I smiled.

Not because his struggle was particularly funny.

But because he was finally discovering how much effort ordinary mornings required.

Lunches didn’t magically appear.

Missing shoes didn’t locate themselves.

Water bottles needed washing.

Permission slips had to be signed.

And three children had three different sets of needs.

At 7:42, Grant knocked on our bedroom door.

His tie was crooked.

Toby stood behind him wearing only one sock.

“I might be late to work,” Grant admitted.

I glanced at the clock.

“Okay.”

He waited.

I waited too.

Finally, he asked, “Could you take Toby?”

“My meeting starts in eight minutes.”

He looked down at our son.

Then back at me.

“Right. I’ll handle it.”

He walked away.

I heard him calling his supervisor and arranging for an assistant manager to cover the beginning of his shift.

Then he took all three children to school and aftercare.

Nobody missed school.

Everyone had breakfast.

And nothing required me to abandon my meeting.

Later that afternoon, I found Ruby sitting on the stairs.

She held a folded piece of paper.

“Aunt Megan, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Are Finn and I going to have to leave?”

My heart tightened.

I sat beside her.

“Why do you think that?”

“Mom’s been crying. Uncle Grant is upset. And you said you couldn’t take care of us.”
