The Empty Guitar Stand

For almost two years, the first sound I heard when I came home from work was my son’s guitar.

It usually drifted down the hallway before I had even taken off my coat, sometimes hesitant and repetitive because fourteen-year-old Noah Whitaker was working through a difficult passage, and sometimes so confident that I would stand quietly in the kitchen for a minute, listening before he realized I was home.
