PART 1 — THE CARD ON THE FLOOR

My husband slapped my debit card out of my hand at my thirty-six-week appointment, then told the receptionist to cancel the ultrasound.

“She’s not paying six hundred and eighty dollars for another picture.”

The card landed beneath a chair beside the check-in desk.
