The Woman Everyone Overlooked

There were many evenings during my marriage when I could have corrected people, and for a long time I believed choosing not to do so was a kind of strength.

One of those evenings happened in a beautiful old house outside Newport, Rhode Island, where my husband’s parents had lived for almost thirty years, raised three children, hosted Christmas dinners, planted hydrangeas beneath the kitchen windows, and accumulated enough memories that the possibility of losing the place had frightened them more than they were willing to admit.
