“The pizza and the cake are still on the order, and I can keep those. The party room is gone, but the small lounge by the arcade opens up at two thirty.”

A wave of relief washed over me.

“It’s not fancy. It holds about fifteen kids. I can give you the lane package at the same time, and I’ll throw in the party host at no charge.”

I laughed, and it came out wobbly. “Yes. Yes, please.”

“It’ll be the party she gets,” I said. “That’s what matters.”

“This is not another one of those times. You don’t get to tell me that’s just how she is. Your mother knowingly overrode both of us because she thinks her judgment outranks ours, and the person who got hurt is a ten-year-old.”

“So here is where we are. You lay down the law with your mother, or you think very carefully about whether you want to be a husband and a father. Because I am done watching you bend to Mommy’s will while Caroline and I pay for it.”

“That’s not what this is.” His voice rose, and I realized I’d never heard him raise it at her before.

“I only did what I thought was best,” Rose said finally, and it sounded small.
