The air in Napa Valley always smelled of crushed grapes, dry earth, and money. Specifically, the kind of money that didn’t need to shout to be heard.

I stood on the manicured gravel driveway of Château de la Serre, watching the valets in tailored grey vests whisk away a parade of European luxury cars. I had arrived in a rented sedan, a practical choice that seemed to offend the very gravel it parked on. I smoothed the skirt of my navy-blue dress. It was a good dress, purchased from a respectable boutique in Chicago, but surrounded by the sea of custom silk and imported organza, it suddenly felt like armor made of cardboard.
