The Morning I Disappeared

The first thing I remember was the sound of my mother-in-law’s voice.

Not screaming.

Not panicking.

Just calm.

Far too calm.

“She slipped on the front steps.”

I was lying on the emergency-room bed, my wrist throbbing and a sharp pain running through my ribs.
