He hesitated.

“Why?”

The room went silent.

Sylvia grabbed the folder.

“We’re only trying to protect Thomas.”

I smiled politely.

“Then you should have asked Thomas to protect himself.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“What exactly are you hiding?”

I almost laughed.

There it was.

The question I had been waiting for.

But I didn’t answer.

I simply said goodnight.

They left.

The moment the door closed, I locked it.

Then I walked to my study and opened the bottom drawer of my desk.

“What’s happened?”

“My husband and his mother just brought a notary to my house and tried to get me to sign documents giving him control over my assets.”

There was a pause.

“No.”

“Good.”

I exhaled.

The next morning, I met Margaret.

She reviewed the documents I had been shown.

At first, everything looked normal.

“What’s this?”

He looked at Sylvia.

He couldn’t answer.

Sylvia suddenly turned toward him.

“You told me she had agreed to this!”

Thomas snapped,

“I didn’t know she had all that money!”

The room went silent.

I didn’t say anything.

Thomas stared at it.
