My husband banned me from our family lake house because he wanted a “men’s weekend.” I agreed—and that decision exposed a secret he never expected me to find.

That was how Thursday evening began.

“Don’t pack any bags, Sarah,” Mark said as he loaded his fishing coolers into the bed of his truck. “The guys just want to drink beer and watch the game without any nagging.”

I stood in the garage doorway, staring at the man I had been married to for eleven years.

“I spent four days cleaning the cabin last weekend.”

“And we appreciate it, honey. But a men’s weekend is for men. Go get your nails done.”

His tone made the insult sound like a favor.

I looked past him at the coolers, folding chairs, fishing rods, and bags he had packed as if the lake house belonged entirely to him.

“Your mother said she was going up tomorrow,” I said.

Mark paused.

Then he looked toward the truck instead of at me.

“Mama is just dropping off some food. She won’t stay. Don’t make an issue out of this.”

“I am.”
