For two years, I had been the person beside my grandmother whenever life became difficult.

My mother was technically her daughter.

But somehow, I had become the one who showed up.

It had been a tradition in our family for twenty-two years.

Grandma made it in the same blue glass dish every Sunday.

My mother never once carried that dish to the sink.

She would eat a serving, compliment the pudding, then leave her plate on the table while Grandma cleaned everything herself.

But when Grandma ended up in the hospital after a serious heart episode, suddenly my mother became very interested in her.

The house had belonged to my grandfather before he passed away.

It wasn’t a mansion.

It wasn’t even particularly modern.

But it sat on a large piece of land in a neighborhood that had changed dramatically over the years.

Grandma smiled faintly.

“Just promise me.”

So I promised.

Mom was speaking to the realtor.

“She isn’t going home,” Mom said.

“She’s seventy-nine. Her things are just clutter now.”

“Exactly,” Mom replied.

I felt sick.

Grandma was lying ten feet away behind a hospital curtain.

People applauded.

She paused dramatically.

Several relatives smiled.

Someone asked, “Your mother’s house?”

Mom nodded.

“My mother has agreed to transfer it to me.”

My stomach tightened.

She hadn’t agreed to anything.

“And honestly, it’s time for someone practical to take care of things.”

A few people glanced toward me.

Mom smiled.

“Some people spend too much time worrying about things that don’t concern them.”

I knew exactly who she meant.

Then she raised her champagne glass.

Everyone applauded.

Because I was holding Grandma’s envelope.

I slipped into the hallway.

My mother had no authority to sell it.

Then I reached the final page.

My breath stopped.

Grandma had left the house to me.

Not my mother.

Grandma had also left instructions for something else.

I found a small flash drive inside the envelope.

I walked back into the party.

Mom was cutting the cake.

I stepped forward.

“Mom.”

She turned.

“What?”

“I think everyone should hear something.”

She frowned.

I connected the flash drive to the television.

Grandma’s face appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in her hospital bed.

And she was smiling.

“Hello, everyone.”

Mom’s face immediately changed.

Grandma continued.

A few relatives turned toward Mom.

Grandma smiled.

Then Grandma said the words that shattered the room.

“She hasn’t visited me because she loves me.”

Mom started crying.

Grandma continued.

“I am not dying.”
