“Dad,” I interrupted, my grip tightening on the phone. “What exactly did you take out of her glove box that night?”

The phone line went dead silent. I could hear the local meteorologist on his TV predicting a clipper system moving in.

“That is none of your concern. That is her private business,” my father deflected.

“Your name is on the bank card, Dad,” I stated coldly.

She laughed out loud, leaning back in her ergonomic mesh chair, and delivered the sentence that will echo in my nightmares until the day I die.

“God, MNA, all this ridiculous family drama over a silly little savings account?”

There is a very specific, hollow feeling to knowing a devastating truth in a family where nobody ever tells you anything. It doesn’t feel like wielding power. It feels like a profound, isolating loneliness, albeit one with a spectacular vantage point.

Because I knew exactly what that letter from Columbus contained. “She is my daughter, MNA!” he wailed.

“So am I,” I replied. I didn’t scream it. I didn’t cry. I have never once in my entire life raised my voice to my father.

“He wrote your insult on a second-grade worksheet,” I said softly. I turned my back and walked up the stairs, leaving her weeping on the floor.

“MNA, please, he’s just a boy…”

“He is the victim it happened to,” I stated flatly. “If seventeen adults are going to sign a legal document debating whether or not a child was harmed, they are going to look that child in the eye while they do it.”

He sold his beloved boat, and he now spends his mornings driving Payton twenty-two minutes each way to Fairlawn Elementary because they are forced to rent a cramped duplex in Barberton. The towering yellow sunflowers planted along the chain-link fence at the hospital courtyard bloomed beautifully in August, exactly the way they do every single year.
