When the CEO asked why I was leaving, I quietly placed my $300 paycheck in front of her. She stared at it for several seconds, then picked up the phone and called HR.

That was the moment everything started to change.

My name is Daniel, and I had worked at Hartwell Automation for six years.

I wasn’t an executive.

I wasn’t a manager.

I was a field service technician.

The kind of employee most people never noticed unless something broke.

And when something broke, I was usually the guy driving toward it.

A machine could fail at 2:17 in the morning, hundreds of miles away, and my phone would ring.

I’d get out of bed, throw on my work clothes, grab my tools, and start driving.

I stepped into her office.

But I was tired.

I nodded.

I nodded again.

She picked up the check.

I told her.

She looked at the number again.

My heart started pounding.

HR arrived about ten minutes later.

Evelyn didn’t even offer them a seat.

The HR director opened a laptop.

At first, everything looked normal.

The HR director hesitated.

“Why is it deducted?”

“It’s complicated.”

Evelyn’s voice became colder.

The longer they looked, the quieter the room became.

I looked at her.

She paused.
