I had spent twenty-six months learning how to live with a dead man.

That sounds strange, I know.

But grief changes the meaning of time.

The first few months after David died, I measured my days in small victories.

Getting out of bed.

Answering emails.

Going to the grocery store without crying when I passed his favorite cereal.

Eventually, I stopped expecting to hear his key in the front door.

I thought I had finally accepted that he was gone.

Then my neighbor told me she could hear a woman begging for help inside my house.

Every afternoon.

At first, I laughed.

“What woman?”

She lived three houses down and had always been the observant type. She noticed everything.

The strange car parked at the curb.

But this time, she looked genuinely frightened.

“She keeps saying, ‘Please, somebody help me.’”

I stared at her.

“My house is empty.”

“I know.”

She lowered her voice.

“But I heard her again yesterday.”

I checked every room that night.

No broken windows.

No hidden speakers.

No signs anyone had entered.

I told myself my neighbor had mistaken another house for mine.

Until she came back the following afternoon.

“It happened again.”

That was when fear replaced disbelief.

The next morning, I decided to test the house.

I told everyone at work I was leaving early.

Instead, I drove around the block, parked several streets away, walked back through my backyard, and climbed into my bedroom through the unlocked window.

Then I hid beneath my bed.

It was ridiculous.

I knew that.

I was a grown woman hiding under my own bed because my neighbor thought she heard a mysterious woman crying.

But something inside me insisted I stay.

At 2:14 p.m., I heard my front door unlock.

I froze.

Footsteps crossed the hallway.

Whoever had entered wasn’t afraid of being caught.

Then I heard heels clicking across the floor.

A woman walked into my bedroom.

From beneath the bed, I could see only her shoes.

There was a thin scratch across the toe of the left one.

A man’s voice answered through the speaker.

“Did you check the garage?”

My entire body went cold.

I knew that voice.

I knew the rhythm.

The slight rasp at the end of certain words.

The calm, almost impatient way he spoke when he thought something wasn’t going according to plan.

It was David.

My husband.

Dead for twenty-six months.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

The woman said, “Her car isn’t here. But it wasn’t at the office, either.”

Then came a faint tapping sound.

My heart nearly stopped.

David used to tap his wedding ring against his coffee mug whenever he was thinking.

He had done it while reading the newspaper.

While waiting for dinner.

While deciding what movie we should watch.

He had even tapped that same way while waiting for my answer when he proposed.

I hadn’t heard it since the morning before his supposed death.

The woman stepped closer to my dresser.

“Where should I look?”

“The bedroom,” David said.

“For what?”

“The burgundy folder.”

I closed my eyes.

That folder wasn’t valuable because of money.

It contained documents David had insisted on keeping hidden.

I had never understood why.

The woman opened the top drawer.

Perfume bottles rattled.

Fabric shifted.

Then she opened another.

I could hear her breathing.

“It’s not here.”

“Look again.”

My mind raced.

David was alive.

Or someone was using his voice.

The woman suddenly stopped.

“What about the garage?”

“Check it.”

Her heels disappeared down the hallway.

I waited.

Then I crawled out.

My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped my phone.

I didn’t call the police immediately.

I know that sounds irrational.

But I needed proof.

If I called them and told them my dead husband was speaking through a phone, I knew exactly how it would sound.

So I followed the woman.

Through the bedroom window, I saw her cross the backyard.

She entered my detached garage.

I grabbed my coat and slipped out the front door.

By the time I reached the garage, she was gone.

But something was wrong.

The garage door was still locked.

I searched the floor.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a small rectangular piece of paper beneath an old toolbox.

I picked it up.

It was a photograph.

David.

Standing beside a dark SUV.

And beside him was the woman in the black pumps.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Three days after David’s funeral.

My hands went numb.

I drove straight to the state police office.

This time, I didn’t tell them my theory.

I showed them the photograph.

One detective studied it for a long time.

“Where did you get this?”

“My garage.”

He looked at me.

“Are you certain this is your husband?”

“Yes.”

He turned the photograph over.

Then his expression changed.

“There was never a confirmed visual identification of your husband’s body.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“The fire destroyed most of the vehicle. The body was identified through dental records.”

“But they told me he was dead.”

“They told you the remains were consistent with your husband’s dental records.”

That distinction had never been explained to me.

The detective opened a file.

Then he said something that made my stomach twist.

“Your husband’s death certificate was filed unusually quickly.”

“By whom?”

He hesitated.

“His business partner.”

David’s business partner.

Marcus.

The man who had attended the funeral.

The man who had hugged me and told me David would always be watching over me.

The man who had encouraged me to sell David’s company because “it was too painful to keep.”

Suddenly, every memory felt different.

The detective asked me about the burgundy folder.

I told him everything.

He went silent.

Then he asked:

“Did your husband ever tell you what was inside?”

“No.”

“Then you need to find it before they do.”

That night, I searched every room.

Nothing.

I searched the attic.

Nothing.

The basement.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

David had always hated the old grandfather clock in our hallway.

He said it was ugly.

Yet after his death, he had left one final instruction in his will:

Never remove the clock from the house.

I opened the wooden panel behind it.

There was a hidden compartment.

Inside was the burgundy folder.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The first pages contained bank statements.

Then property records.

Then photographs.

Dozens of them.

David had secretly photographed Marcus meeting people at hotels, restaurants, parking garages.

There were documents showing money transfers.

Shell companies.

False invoices.

And finally, a typed statement from David.

I read it twice before I understood what I was seeing.

David had discovered that Marcus had been stealing millions from the company.

David planned to expose him.

But Marcus found out.

The final page contained a handwritten sentence:

“If you’re reading this, they believe I’m dead.”

I stopped breathing.

Below it was another sentence.

“But if Nora is alive, don’t trust anyone who tells her I died.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then came three taps.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

I whispered, “David?”

A man’s voice finally answered.

“Yes.”

I sank into the chair.

“You’re alive.”

“I’ve been alive the whole time.”

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

Silence.

Then he said:

“Because if Marcus knew you had the folder, you’d be dead too.”

I couldn’t speak.

“The woman in your house,” he continued, “isn’t working for Marcus.”

“Then who is she?”

Another silence.

“She is the reason I disappeared.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

David said, “Her name is Elena.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman beside him.

The woman who had entered my house.

The woman who had been searching for the folder.

Then David said something I will never forget.

“She isn’t my mistress, Nora.”

I closed my eyes.

“She is your sister.”

My heart stopped.

I had never had a sister.

At least, that’s what my parents had always told me.

David continued.

“Your parents gave her up when you were both children. Marcus found her years ago and used her to get to me.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why would she help you?”

“Because she discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

David’s voice dropped.

“The crash wasn’t an accident.”

I gripped the phone.

“Then what happened?”

He answered with five words.

“Marcus was driving the car.”

I looked toward the hallway.

The grandfather clock suddenly began to chime.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then I heard something behind me.

A floorboard creaked.

I slowly turned.

Elena was standing in my doorway.

But this time, she wasn’t holding a phone.

She was holding a gun.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

And she whispered:

“David never told you the whole story.”

Then she raised the gun toward me.
