For fifteen years, I had hated my sister.

Not the kind of hatred that burns loudly.

Mine was quieter.

Colder.

I simply erased her.

Her birthday disappeared from my calendar. Her calls went unanswered. Her Christmas cards went unopened. When relatives mentioned her name, I changed the subject.

And when she died three weeks ago, I didn’t go to her funeral.
