The courtroom smelled of old documents, bitter black coffee, and damp wool coats from the rain falling outside over downtown Milwaukee. Above the polished oak benches, the fluorescent lights hummed steadily, casting a chilly, unnatural glow over the entire space.

Rosalie Bennett sat motionless at her table, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. On her left ring finger, a subtle pale mark remained where her wedding ring had rested for more than a decade.
