Mom’s face went pale.

Vanessa slowly lowered the scissors.

“You said that was the check.”

“It was.”

Dad looked confused.

“Then what are you talking about?”

I pointed at the shredded paper.

Mom stared at the pieces.

Her mouth opened slightly.

“Nothing.”

My father sat down.

Vanessa looked at my mother.

My father frowned.

Mom’s face changed.

Dad stood.

I nodded.
