I caught the deep, soothing timbre of my husband’s voice a second before I managed to pry my heavy eyelids open.

I was lying in a dimly lit private room at Saint Vincent Community Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. My mouth tasted like rust, an unbearable metallic bite coating my tongue, and my limbs felt as heavy as lead weights anchored to the mattress. Through my hazy vision, I could barely make out the thin plastic intravenous tube hooked to my forearm and the shadowy silhouette of my husband standing near the window blinds.
