Three Minutes Before I Said “I Do,” I Found My Daughter Hiding Behind the Chapel

Three minutes before I was supposed to marry the woman I believed would complete our family, I found my ten-year-old daughter sitting behind an old stone chapel with her shoes in her lap.

Her pale blue flower-girl dress was wrinkled at the knees. The ribbon I had tied around her waist that morning had come loose. Beside her sat a small wicker basket filled with white petals she was supposed to scatter down the aisle.
