Part 1: Greetings and Social Check-ins (1, 2, 7, 17, 18)

In English, greetings are often less about gathering information and more about β€œchecking the vibe.”

  • β€œWhat’s up?” β†’ β€œNothing much, you?”

    • The Logic: This is not usually a literal question about what is happening above you. It means β€œWhat is new in your life?” β€œNothing much” is the standard, polite way to say things are normal.

  • β€œHow’s it going?” β†’ β€œPretty good!”

    • The Logic: A casual version of β€œHow are you?” Notice that we use β€œgood” (adjective) even though grammatically it could be β€œwell.” In casual speech, β€œPretty good” is the go-to answer.
