Then smiled.

A weak, frightened smile.

“I wish you’d told me.”

“I tried.”

He didn’t answer.

I handed him coffee.

“Did the emergency surgery go well?”

His hand tightened around the mug.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He looked at me carefully.

“You seem upset.”

“I’m tired.”

That was all I said.
