I said it without raising my voice.

A man at the far end of the table cleared his throat.
His name was Gerald Ashworth.

I returned to the host stand.

“She’s calling Ethan,” I told her.

“Let her call.”

“She pays, or we establish a payment schedule. Then we go back to running the restaurant.”
Maya studied my face.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You’re doing that calm thing.”
“What calm thing?”
“The thing you do when you’ve completely decided something.”
I almost smiled.
Then she said,
“For what it’s worth, the staff has been waiting seven months for this.”
“I know.”
“The servers have been absorbing her behavior since April.”
“I know.”
I looked toward the private room.
“Whatever gratuity is collected tonight goes entirely to the staff who worked both events.”
“Both?”
“Both.”
Then my phone rang.
Ethan.
“Claire.”
“Yes.”
“My mother called me.”
“I assumed she would.”
“She’s really upset.”
“I imagine so.”

“Yes.”
“Claire, she doesn’t have that kind of money available.”

There was a pause.

“I know.”
“Do you?”
He was quiet.

Finally, he said,
“She’s my mother.”
“Yes.”
I took a breath.
“And this is my restaurant.”
Neither fact erased the other.
“What do you want me to do?”
“I want the invoice paid.”
“And if she can’t?”
“Then we find a legitimate arrangement.”
He was silent for a moment.
“I’m coming in.”
“That’s your choice.”
About twenty minutes later, Gerald approached me again.
“I’d like to propose something.”
I listened.
“I’ll pay the restaurant.”
Evelyn immediately protested.
“Gerald, no.”
He raised a hand.
“I’ll pay Claire now. You and I can work out repayment privately. That protects the restaurant while giving you time.”
Then he looked at me.
“Would that be acceptable?”
“Yes.”
Gerald handed me his card.
I processed the payment.

I returned with the receipt.
He signed it.

“No.”
He looked around the restaurant.

Ethan arrived shortly after nine.
He used the service entrance rather than walking through the front.
He found me near the host stand.

“Yes.”
“Gerald?”
“Yes.”
He started talking about what his mother might do next.
I stopped him.
“Ethan, I need you to understand something.”
He went quiet.
“When your mother stood in my restaurant and told forty people that I was her servant, she wasn’t simply making a joke.”
His expression changed.
“She was describing how she sees me.”
“I know.”
“And when you called and asked me to let this go, you were asking me to absorb the cost of that again.”
He looked down.
“I know that too.”
“I’m not doing it anymore.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
He looked at me.
“I should have supported you after the first event.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I was protecting her.”
“You were.”
“And I wasn’t protecting you.”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“I’m sorry.”
I believed him.
Ethan wasn’t a bad husband.
But he had spent his entire life managing Evelyn.

“I need something different from you going forward,” I said.
“What?”
“I need a clear line between being her son and being my husband.”
He listened.
“If she calls you and tells you I’m creating drama because I’m enforcing rules in my own business, I need you to say that I’m running my business.”
“I will.”
“You don’t have to agree with me about everything.”
“I know.”
“But you cannot automatically override me just because saying no to your mother makes you uncomfortable.”
He nodded.

“I believe you.”
Most of Evelyn’s guests had left by then.
She remained in the private dining room.

“And if I want to host another event?”
“You contact Maya.”
I counted the steps.
“You sign a contract. You pay the deposit. You settle the remaining balance within thirty days.”
“Like everyone else?”
“Exactly like everyone else.”
She became quiet.
Then she said,
“Gerald thinks very highly of you.”
“That was generous of him.”
“He told me he had wanted me to properly introduce him to you for years.”
I blinked.
“He wants to bring clients here.”
“That would be wonderful.”
“He says he’ll book through Maya.”
“With a contract.”
Evelyn almost smiled.

Then she looked at me.

“I believe you.”
She hesitated.

“With me?”
