“Mom, this one hurts when I chew.”

She stood barefoot on the kitchen floor, still wearing her school uniform, one hand pressed against her cheek.

“I’m her stepfather.”

“I understand.”

“What?”

He looked toward the door.

“Please don’t react yet.”

“Doctor, what are you talking about?”

He glanced at Chloe, who was sitting in the hallway with the hygienist.

I couldn’t speak.

“What kind of injury?”

“Repeatedly?”

He nodded.

“I’m not saying who did it. I’m telling you that I have enough concern to ask you whether you’ve noticed anything unusual.”
