I was thirty-eight when I stopped expecting my family to notice how much of my life I had given to Bell & Sons Auto Repair outside Dayton, Ohio.

My grandfather Walter opened the shop in a narrow brick building and taught me to rebuild engines before I was old enough to drive. After he died, I stayed and kept the place alive. My older brother Mason moved to Chicago, built a comfortable life, and visited mostly on holidays.
