PART 1

“Sir, your son has been sleeping in my house for six days, and I can no longer keep hiding him.”

That was the first sentence I heard after spending nearly a week out of touch while crop-dusting cornfields between the border towns of Fairview and Pinecrest.

My name is Lucas Drake, I am forty-one years old, and I work as an agricultural pilot. When you fly just a few feet above the ground with power lines, high trees, and fence posts passing right in front of your windshield, a mobile phone is completely useless. During long working days, we would leave our phones stored inside a locker in the hangar and only check them once the daily operations were fully over.
