“Where’s Lucy’s cello?”

The question came out before I could even take off my coat.

My eleven-year-old daughter, Lucy, was standing beside the empty cello stand in my parents’ music room.

The stand was still there.

The little black cushion Grandma Margaret had sewn for Lucy was still there.

But the cello was gone.
