As we were leaving, Jason suddenly remembered something.
He pulled out his phone.
“There was a photo.”
“What photo?” I asked.
“Ashley sent me one this morning.”
He opened it.
It was a picture of Caleb standing beside a birthday cake.

Jason zoomed in.
Then his face went completely white.
“What?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He looked at the date attached to the photo.
Then he looked at me.
“The date says this was taken six months before Caleb was born.”
I stared at the screen.
“That can’t be right.”
Jason checked the original file.
The metadata confirmed it.
The photograph hadn’t been edited.
Ashley had accidentally sent us a picture taken before Caleb was even born.

A hospital bracelet sitting on the kitchen counter.

Daniel recognized it immediately.
He went completely silent.

We all stared at him.

Ashley had been working at the hospital at the time.
