Hands shaking, I dialed.

A man answered on the second ring — soft-voiced, warm, heartbreakingly familiar.

“Mara,” he murmured, relieved. “I didn’t think you’d call again tonight.”

My lungs turned to stone.

“Who is this?” I managed.

Silence.

Then the click of disconnection.
