“No,” I said. “I was twenty-eight when I should have known better.”
Sarah smiled through her tears.
Then she reached across the table and took my hand.
“I never wanted to replace your mother.”
“I know.”
“I just promised her I’d never leave you alone.”
That night, I went to see Dad.
For the first time in fourteen years, I hugged him.
Neither of us said anything for a long time.
Then I whispered:
“I read Mom’s letter.”
Dad closed his eyes.
“She wanted you to know someday.”
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought you’d hate us even more.”
I laughed through my tears.
“I already did.”
He smiled sadly.
Then he said something that broke my heart.
“She was right about everything.”
My wedding day came the following year.
There were flowers everywhere.
Music.
Family.
Laughter.
And in the front row sat my father and Sarah.
I walked down the aisle holding a small photograph of my mother.
When I reached the altar, I looked at them.
And for the first time, I didn’t see a woman who had stolen my mother’s place.
