“The palace was made aware of the move,” a source confirmed to Page Six. King Charles III reportedly learned of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to Britain just days before the news broke publicly.
An insider pointed to a very personal motive. “I know that Charles is the reason they are moving back,” the source claimed. The monarch reportedly “looks forward” to spending time with his son and daughter-in-law now that they’re closer to home.

How They Got There: A Six-Figure Flight
Getting the family to Britain, however, wasn’t cheap. Page Six reveals that the couple chartered their plane through Planet 9, a global private aviation company.
The rate reportedly runs about $12,000 per hour. For a 10-hour flight from Los Angeles to Birmingham, that puts the total cost solidly in the six figures, according to aviation estimates.

The jet itself is a Bombardier Global Express XRS, refurbished in 2023 according to Planet 9’s own listing. It’s built to comfortably seat up to 13 passengers.
The aircraft features two bathrooms and five beds capable of sleeping six people. There’s also room for 12 to 15 medium suitcases — plenty of space for a family relocating across an ocean.

Why They Skipped Commercial Flights
So why go private at all? A source told Page Six the couple wanted to be able to bring their family’s dogs along for the move — Pula, a black Labrador retriever, and Mia, a beagle.
Flying private made that far easier than navigating pet policies on a commercial airline. Not every member of the household made the trip, though. People reported that the family is leaving their chickens behind at the Montecito home.
Archie’s Chick Inn — the coop named after the couple’s seven-year-old son — was even featured on Markle’s Netflix show “With Love, Meghan.” The Sussexes also share a daughter, Lilibet, five.
As for the new UK arrangement, the family will reportedly move into a “non-royal residence” and will “continue with their business enterprises.” They will not be taking on duties as working royals.

The news didn’t sit well with everyone online. Commenters on Facebook were quick to point out the logistics — and the optics.
“You can’t bring chicken from US to England,” one person reacted. Another wrote, “Harry was supposed to worried [sic] about climate chat [sic]…. When it suits him,” while a third added, “Funny how they are green crusaders , unless it’s them !”

Reactions on X carried a similar edge, with several users weighing the jet’s cost against the couple’s past comments on security funding.
“A mansion in California & a multi million pound house in Portugal & travel in private jets yet they think British taxpayers should pay for their security?” one user commented.

What This Move Really Means for the Family
The six-figure flight may have gotten Harry, Meghan, and their children to Britain, but the jet itself is only part of a much bigger story. There’s one crucial detail that changes what the move actually means.
According to an August 19 exclusive report from People, the children are expected to begin school in Britain in September, giving Harry and Meghan their first proper family base in the country in years.

But this does not appear to be a permanent goodbye to California. Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, reportedly plan to keep their $14.5 million Montecito home as well as their vacation property in Portugal while establishing a separate, private residence in Britain.
The exact location of their new UK home is being kept under wraps, as is the school Archie and Lilibet are expected to attend. Given the intense public interest that has followed the Sussexes for years, the secrecy is hardly surprising.
Still, simply having their own home in Britain represents a significant change. Harry and Meghan have not had a permanent UK base since giving up Frogmore Cottage, their former Windsor residence, gifted by Harry’s late granny dearest, Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles III reportedly asked the couple to vacate the property following the publication of Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare.”

King Charles III Is Reportedly a Major Reason Behind the Return
One of the most striking explanations for the decision involves King Charles. Page Six reported that Harry and Meghan want to spend more time in Britain partly so they can be closer to the King. “I know that Charles is a big reason for their return,” one royal insider told the outlet.
The reported motivation carries extra weight in light of Harry’s previous comments about his father. Discussing their strained relationship in a 2025 BBC interview, Harry said, “I don’t know how much longer my father has.”
Charles, 77, has been living with cancer, and Page Six reported that he transitioned to a precautionary phase of treatment in December. That appears to make the timing of Harry’s return particularly meaningful. But King Charles is only part of the story.

Sources also say Harry and Meghan want Archie and Lilibet to have stronger relationships with relatives, family friends and the wider community their father grew up around. “They have so many friends and family in the UK whom they remain so close to,” one source told Page Six.
With the children reportedly expected to attend school in Britain, it may offer them a dramatically different experience from their life in California. And interestingly, Harry may have been quietly thinking about exactly that issue for quite some time.
Harry May Have Hinted at the Move More than a Year Ago
More than a year before reports of the Sussexes’ UK move emerged, Singer Joss Stone spoke about a conversation she had with Harry after moving her own family back to Britain from Nashville.
Discussing Harry, Joss told Hello!, “He asked about how we were settling back in and was genuinely interested in our move home.” She even joked at the time, “Maybe Harry will move back too. That would be nice.” In hindsight, Harry’s questions seem particularly intriguing.
According to Joss, he was especially interested in what returning to Britain had meant for her children. “He was saying how wonderful the schools are here and how important community is for children,” she recalled.
Joss said those same considerations had helped persuade her family to return, explaining that they wanted their children to grow up surrounded by family and friends, with a strong sense of belonging and in a safe environment.

Harry’s apparent interest in schools, community and family life now looks like it may have been an early clue. Yet there is an important complication when it comes to the Sussex children’s royal relatives.
Page Six reported there is little to no chance that Archie and Lilibet will suddenly begin spending significant time with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. That’s because the reported frost between Harry and William apparently remains.

According to the outlet, William is still not speaking to his younger brother. So although the Sussexes are reportedly returning partly to strengthen family relationships, that does not necessarily mean a sweeping royal reconciliation is underway.
There are, however, other relatives with whom Harry and Meghan remain close. The couple has maintained a particularly warm relationship with Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, who share three children.

That existing network could make the Sussexes’ transition back to Britain considerably easier. Harry also reportedly retains a large circle of longtime friends in the UK, while Meghan has connections of her own, including college friend Lindsay Jill Roth, who divides her time between London and Chicago with her husband and their young sons. In other words, the couple is not exactly returning without a support system.
The Move Could Give Harry the UK Role He Has Wanted, Without Royal Duties
For Harry in particular, having a UK base could also make his charitable work far easier. He is expected to be able to devote significantly more time to organizations including WellChild and Scotty’s Little Soldiers, along with his work connected to the Invictus community.
Harry was already expected to return to Britain in September for engagements connected to WellChild, which he has supported for more than two decades, as well as Invictus-related events. Among those events is the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards and gala, although sources close to the Sussexes have reportedly not confirmed whether Harry and Meghan will attend.
Meghan, meanwhile, is expected to continue running her lifestyle company, As Ever, across the family’s international bases while pursuing additional projects. That division of responsibilities points toward another revealing aspect of the move.
Those close to the Sussexes reportedly believe Harry and Meghan have now achieved something very similar to the “half in, half out” arrangement they originally proposed to the royal family years ago.
The difference is that they appear to have reached that position independently rather than as working royals. They can maintain a home in Britain, continue supporting causes there, travel internationally and earn their own income — all while remaining financially independent.
Allies say the Sussexes have built the life they originally wanted: supporting the causes that matter to them while paying their own bills and mortgage and relying on no taxpayer funding. That makes the UK move significant, but perhaps not in the way royal watchers might initially assume.
One Major Obstacle Appears to Have Shifted
There is also another enormous factor that could help explain why Harry now feels able to bring Meghan and the children back: security. For years, the issue has been one of the biggest obstacles to the Sussex family spending meaningful time in Britain.

According to Page Six, Harry has been waiting for a review of his security arrangements by the government committee RAVEC. The precise protections that will apply to Meghan, Archie and Lilibet during their extended stay have not been publicly detailed.
A Sussex spokesperson also declined to comment to People on the question of security. Even so, People reported that the move represents the clearest indication yet that Harry believes the family’s long-running security concerns have reached a point where he is comfortable having Meghan and the children based in Britain again.
There may be another emotional factor at play, too. Sources close to Harry reportedly believe that recent UK visits have strengthened his conviction that the more people interact with Meghan, the more positively they respond to her.

So the move may offer Meghan something she has rarely had since the couple departed royal life: the opportunity to spend an extended period in Britain on their own terms, outside the structure of being senior working royals. But that brings us to perhaps the most important distinction of all.
Their UK Return Comes with One Very Important Catch
Harry and Meghan may be coming back to Britain; their children may attend British schools; Harry may spend considerably more time supporting UK charities, and the family may live closer to King Charles and other relatives. However, what is reportedly not coming back is their former royal role.
According to People, Charles is said to have made it clear that there will be no change in Harry and Meghan’s standing. They are expected to remain private individuals and non-working members of the royal family, consistent with the arrangement made when they stepped away from royal duties. So despite the dramatic optics of a Sussex family return to Britain, this apparently isn’t a return to royal life.

Instead, it seems to be something considerably more nuanced: a family establishing a British home while holding onto the independent life it built overseas. The Sussexes are reportedly not abandoning Montecito, and sources stress that their UK stay is extended rather than permanent, while their longer-term residential plans remain unclear.
Still, the reported move would place the Sussexes back in the UK after Meghan previously described the intense press attention she feared could shape everyday life with their children.
Meghan Previously Raised Concerns About Raising Archie in the UK
Meghan described one of those concerns in a 2022 interview with The Cut. She said that if her son, Archie, attended school in the UK, she would not be able to handle ordinary school drop-offs and pickups without a royal photo call and a press pen of about 40 photographers.

What King Charles III Learned About the Reported Move
On August 19, 2026, CNN reported that King Charles III was first made aware of the relocation plans on Sunday. The plans were not raised or discussed during Harry and Meghan’s family visit to the UK in July. Still, the King welcomes the opportunity to see more of the Sussex family “in a private and personal capacity,” the report said.

Reports of a possible return come just weeks after the Sussexes’ July 10 family reunion with Charles at Highgrove, where signs of reconciliation emerged despite unresolved tensions.

A Long-Awaited Visit Finally Happens
Buckingham Palace confirmed on a Friday evening that Charles and Camilla had welcomed the Sussex family to the King’s private Gloucestershire residence earlier that afternoon.
The Palace called the meeting a “private family occasion,” a brief description that appeared designed to shut down speculation rather than feed it.

No official photographs were expected to be released. The Palace also indicated that no additional details would be shared because the gathering was considered a personal family matter. Still, the importance of the reunion was difficult to play down.
It was the first time Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in person in more than four years. The children have spent most of their lives in California following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties.
The trip also marked Meghan’s first return to the UK with Harry since September 2022, when the couple attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
Harry had already appeared at several events during this latest visit. However, it was confirmed one day before the family reunion that Meghan and the children would stay away from his final two days of public engagements.

That decision helped the Sussexes move around with less attention. It also allowed them to reach Highgrove without photographers capturing their arrival.
According to the BBC, father and son had both wanted to meet during the visit, and Charles was reportedly determined to make time for his grandchildren.
For a family whose private disputes have repeatedly spilled into public view, simply getting everyone into the same room was an achievement. However, the quiet afternoon at Highgrove followed a much louder week behind palace walls.
The Road to Highgrove Was Anything but Calm
Harry’s visit included cheerful public moments, from joking about his cake-cutting abilities to meeting nurses and supporting wounded service members connected to the Invictus Games. Behind those scenes, however, the atmosphere was reportedly far less relaxed.
Disagreements about accommodation and security had exposed how little trust remained between the Sussex camp and the Palace. Messages and competing briefings reportedly flew in both directions as each side pushed back against the other’s version of events.
The strain was heightened by a High Court judgment involving Harry’s privacy claim against the publisher of the Daily Mail. But these problems began weeks earlier when reports emerged that Meghan and the children planned to join Harry in Britain.
The family had not been back in a long time, and the possibility that they might stay at a royal property was initially seen as evidence that relations had improved. Sadly, that optimism did not last long.
Harry and Meghan’s team reportedly believed extra protection would be arranged to help the family enter and leave the palace grounds safely. Buckingham Palace then moved to correct what it called “misunderstandings,” stressing that security decisions belonged to the Home Office.

No special guarantee, Palace sources insisted, had been given. The disagreement quickly became more personal. According to The Telegraph, sources close to the Palace accused Harry of using his children as “emotional blackmail.”
Some also suggested the trip was a “trap,” claiming the Sussexes might blame the royal household if security arrangements fell apart.
Those accusations introduced an uncomfortable question: Was the family visit an attempt at reconciliation primarily, or did each side suspect the other of trying to gain a public advantage?
The answer remained unclear when the Palace issued its announcement at 6:40 p.m. on July 10: Harry and Meghan had avoided the waiting photographers, and the reunion many doubted would happen had already ended.
A Possible Stay Close to Diana
The location where Harry, Meghan, and the children stayed during the visit was not officially disclosed. One theory placed the family at Althorp House in Northamptonshire, the ancestral home of Princess Diana’s family.
Former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond noted that Althorp’s house and gardens had been scheduled to close on July 10 and 11. The closure would have cost Earl Spencer visitor income, making the timing especially noticeable.

The estate contains portraits, photographs, and reminders of Diana, whom Archie and Lilibet never had the opportunity to meet. Diana is also buried on an island in a lake on the property. A visit could therefore have given Harry a private way to introduce his children to their grandmother’s history.
Jennie also suggested Diana’s sisters, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, may have joined the family there.
Harry has remained close to his mother’s relatives despite his strained relationship with the House of Windsor. Members of the Spencer family have continued supporting him publicly, including at an Invictus Games anniversary event when senior royals stayed away.

Writing for iNews, Jennie also said trust, or the lack of it, remained the central problem between the Sussexes and the Palace. She described the visit as a potential “make or finally break moment” for Harry and his father.
The meeting at Highgrove suggests the relationship has not reached the breaking point. Whether it repaired anything deeper is another matter.
The Brother Who Was Not There
While Charles made time for Harry, Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet, another central member of the family was miles away. William was playing in a charity polo match in Windsor while the Sussexes were at Highgrove.
There were no plans for the brothers to meet during the visit. Harry had travelled to Britain alone several times since 2022, including a trip in September 2025 when he met his father. His relationship with William, however, has remained broken.
The brothers’ continued separation made the Highgrove gathering feel both hopeful and incomplete. That absence may have been practical, but it also reflected the current limits of the family’s reconciliation.
And reconciliation is something Harry has wanted for a while now. Speaking to BBC News in the May 2025 interview and recorded after the loss of his legal appeal over royal security, the Duke of Sussex expressed a mix of sadness, urgency, and clarity about his future.

“I would love reconciliation with my family,” he said. “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. As I said, life is precious. […] You know, he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile.” He added, “If they don’t want that, that’s entirely up to them.”
The interview came shortly after a UK court dismissed his attempt to overturn the government’s decision to downgrade his police protection when he is in Britain. Harry had argued that the ruling subjected him to “unjustified and inferior treatment.” However, on May 2, 2025, the Court of Appeal upheld the decision, rejecting his claim.

During his conversation with BBC’s Neda Torfić, Harry said he was “obviously, pretty gutted about the decision.” The prince also shared that he was unable to return to the United Kingdom with his wife and children. “We thought it was going to go our way, but it certainly hasn’t,” he shared.
At the time, the Duke added he only returned to the UK for funerals, court hearings, and the occasional charity event.
“I put myself at risk for that, but I will continue on with a life of public service,” he said. “I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point. And the things that they’re going to miss is—well, everything. [sic].”
The tension between Harry and the royal institution appeared to hinge almost solely on his loss of security. “Just because you spoke there about forgiveness—it sounds like the last step to repairing relations with your family is the security issue, by what you said there,” Neda noted.

“One hundred percent,” Harry replied. “Whatever noise has been created, whatever stories have been written—this has always been the sticking point.” He went on to explain how the decision to remove his protection in 2020 stunned him.
“God forbid anything should happen. And I don’t regret that at all,” he said of his decision to step away from royal duties. “I thought with all the disagreements and all of the chaos that’s happening, the one thing that I could rely on is my family keeping me safe.”
