Grant opened his mouth.

I turned toward the guests.

Across the lawn, Grant’s brother Preston stopped moving.

Grant’s face tightened.

“Over the final eighteen months of my marriage, hundreds of thousands of dollars were transferred from the property trust my grandmother left me into businesses connected to Grant’s family.”

Vivian immediately stood.

“Claire, this is neither the time nor the place.”

I looked at her.

“Your vacation property was partly funded through one of those transfers, Vivian.”

She sat down.

I turned back to Grant.

“Some of that money also helped renovate this estate.”

Mallory stared at him.

“Grant?”

He said nothing.

I removed the email.

“Eleven days before our divorce was finalized, Grant wrote that I wouldn’t examine the accounts until everything was signed.”

The silence became unbearable.

Then I gave him the final page.

“The disputed accounts are now restricted under court authority, and a formal financial case is already underway.”

Mallory stepped away from him.

Preston began walking rapidly toward us.

Vivian demanded to know what was happening to her property.

Grant stared at me as though he were seeing a stranger.

Maybe he was.

Because the woman he remembered would have apologized for ruining his wedding.
