Part 1 – He Gave My Seat to His Intern Even Though He Knew I Was Pregnant
I was three minutes late boarding the train to Boston, already nauseous and exhausted by the time I dragged my suitcase through the crowded aisle. At twelve weeks pregnant, mornings had become unpredictable, which was exactly why I had reserved a window seat where I could lean against the wall, stay close to the restroom, and get through the trip without feeling worse.
Luke knew all of that.
My fiancé of five years knew because he was the father of the baby.
When I reached our row, however, someone else was sitting in my seat.
Camellia, the twenty-three-year-old intern who had joined our department two months earlier, was curled beside the window with Luke’s charcoal blazer draped over her shoulders. Luke stood beside her with one hand resting on the seat and the other smoothing her hair away from her face.
“You’ll feel better once we start moving,” he told her. “Just relax.”
Camellia noticed me first.
Her eyes immediately dropped toward my stomach before returning to my face.
“Clover, I’m sorry. I told Luke this was your seat.”
Luke turned around and sighed as though my arrival had created a problem he was already tired of solving.

Then I looked back at Luke.

For several seconds, I said nothing.
That morning, Luke had watched me struggle to eat half a piece of toast because the nausea had returned. He had driven us to the station while I kept the air conditioning blasting against my face, and when traffic delayed us, he had taken my suitcase ahead while I stopped in the restroom.
Yet somehow Camellia’s discomfort deserved his blazer, my reserved seat and his tenderness.
Mine deserved an instruction to move.
“Give me my seat back,” I said.
Luke lowered his voice.
“Don’t embarrass me in front of my team. You’re a Senior Director. Act like one.”
Camellia started removing his blazer.
“I can move.”
Luke immediately stopped her.
“No. Stay where you are.”
That was the moment something inside me became very clear.

Now I was carrying our child.
And he still expected me to move.
The departure announcement sounded overhead.
I checked the time.

Luke pointed impatiently toward the back.

I gripped my suitcase handle.
“No.”
“What?”
“I said no.”

Luke followed me several steps.

“I know.”

The doors closed between us.

I read it twice before putting my phone away. Luke still believed the problem was my reaction, not the fact that he had taken a seat I specifically reserved because of my pregnancy and handed it to another woman before ordering me to disappear into the back.
I checked into the hotel shortly after nine. I had barely unpacked when Luke’s mother, Diane, called and told me canceling a wedding eight weeks before the ceremony was an extreme response to an argument.
“Did Luke tell you what happened?”
“He said an intern became ill and you were upset because he helped her.”
“He gave her my reserved seat, Diane. He knew I had been struggling with nausea all morning, and when I reminded him why I needed it, he told me being pregnant didn’t make me helpless.”
Diane went quiet for a moment before suggesting we discuss everything after the Boston meeting. She reminded me that Luke and I were expecting a baby and said stability should matter more than winning an argument, but I was no longer interested in defending a decision I had already made.
“Our baby can have two parents without those parents being married,” I said. “I’m not staying in a relationship just because leaving makes other people uncomfortable.”
After ending the call, I ordered soup and tried to prepare for the following morning. Scott Global was a fourteen-million-dollar account I had spent nearly a year developing, and whatever had happened between Luke and me, I had no intention of allowing our personal situation to interfere with the closing.
Twenty minutes later, someone knocked on my door.
Through the peephole, I saw Luke standing in the hallway.

Luke immediately told me I had embarrassed him on the train and demanded that we resolve the situation before the meeting, while Camellia stood several feet behind him looking increasingly uncomfortable.

I stopped.
“What revised presentation?”

Something belonged to me, Luke decided someone else needed it more, and somehow I was selfish if I objected.

“I thought Clover knew,” Camellia said quietly.

The first time Luke saw the plan, he gave a small, embarrassed smile.
