I still remember the cold tile of the kitchen floor beneath my bare feet when I answered the phone and heard David’s voice break before he could even finish his first sentence.

When he turned six, he called me Dad for the first time.

It happened without any grand announcement. We were sitting at the small kitchen table eating waffles.
