Tyler was staring at me.
Sarah continued.
“He used to work for me. I caught him breaking into my house at night.”
I couldn’t speak.
“I fired him,” she said. “But he kept coming back.”
Then I remembered something.
Tyler had told me he was a local lawn-care worker.
But Sarah had never hired him.
She didn’t even know him.
“Dad,” Sarah whispered, “he knew about the basement because he built it.”
I looked at Tyler.
He suddenly ran.
The police chased him outside.
Minutes later, they caught him behind the garage.
But there was still one question nobody could answer.
If Tyler had been hiding the underground room…
who had been crying inside it?
The police searched the room again.
Behind the chair, they discovered a second hidden door.
Inside was a small storage space.
And there, curled beneath an old blanket, was a woman.
Alive.
Terrified.
She had been missing for nearly six months.
But when the police brought her upstairs, she looked directly at me and said something I’ll never forget.
“You’re Sarah’s father, aren’t you?”
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“Then Sarah is in terrible danger.”
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
“Why?”
The woman pointed toward the house.
“Because the person who locked me down there…”
She paused.
“…wasn’t Tyler.”
My phone buzzed.
A new message from Sarah appeared.
DAD, DON’T COME HOME.
Then another message arrived.
I’M ALREADY INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.
