My daughter, Sarah, called just after 8:00 on a Thursday morning.

I was standing on an aluminum ladder, scooping wet leaves out of my gutters, when my cell phone buzzed in my pocket.

“Morning, Dad.”

“You sound exhausted.”

She laughed softly.

“It’s been a long week.”

Sarah told me she was taking a short trip with some friends. She said she needed a few days away from work, the city, and everything else.
