Then she handed me one final envelope.
“This is the one your grandpa told me to give you only after you found the first letter.”
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Grandpa sitting at his desk with Grandma beside him.
On the back, he had written:
“We know who did it. We always have.”
I looked at Grandma in shock.
“Wait… what does this mean?”
She took a deep breath.
Then she said something I’ll never forget:
“Your grandpa didn’t die suddenly.”
“He chose the day.”
“He knew the truth would come out only after he was gone.”
And then she revealed the final secret.
Grandpa had secretly been working with a lawyer and the police for months.
His “death” had been part of a plan to catch my mother.
But there was something even stranger.
Grandma reached into her pocket and showed me Grandpa’s phone.
A message had been sent from it that morning.
The message contained only six words:
“She found the letter. Begin phase two.”
I stared at Grandma.
My grandfather had been dead for three days.
So who had sent the message?
Grandma looked at me.
And for the first time that day, I saw tears in her eyes.
She whispered:
“Your grandpa didn’t write that message.”
Then we heard a floorboard creak upstairs.
Someone else was awake.
And suddenly, we realized…
we weren’t alone in the house.
