A daughter.
Her name is Emily.
She’s six years old.
She doesn’t know who you are yet.
Dad told me you wouldn’t want us.
I stared at the page.
There was another sentence underneath.
But I don’t believe him anymore.
I looked up.
“Where is she?”
My ex-husband began crying.
“She lives with someone else.”
“Who?”
He handed me another envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A little girl with Karen’s eyes.
On the back, in Karen’s handwriting, were six words:
“Mom, please find my daughter.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then my ex-husband whispered something that shattered me all over again.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
He looked directly at me.
“Karen didn’t die three years ago.”
I froze.
“What did you just say?”
He wiped his face.
“The woman who died three years ago wasn’t Karen.”
My entire body went cold.
He continued.
“Karen disappeared after discovering the truth. I thought she was dead because someone wanted us to believe she was.”
I stared at him.
“Then where is my daughter?”
He slid one final photograph across the table.
It showed Karen.
Older.
Alive.
Standing beside a little girl.
And on the back was a handwritten message:
“Mom, if you’re reading this, I’m finally ready to come home.”
For the first time in years, I looked at the empty chair in my mind.
And I realized something.
I hadn’t been waiting for Karen to come back.
Karen had been waiting for me to find her.
And tomorrow morning, after seventeen years of silence…
I was going to become a mother to my daughter all over again.
