Empty.
He was gone.
The flight attendant immediately contacted the captain.
The cabin crew checked the lavatories, the galley, and the rear section of the plane.
Nothing.
Then a flight attendant came running toward us.
“Sir…”
I turned.
She looked pale.
“We found something.”
She handed me a small envelope.
My name was written across it.
Inside was a photograph.
And a note.
I read the note once.
Then again.
Because I couldn’t believe what it said.
“You deserve to know the truth about your wife. She’s alive.”
My knees nearly gave out.
For two years, I’d believed my wife was dead.
I’d grieved.
Emma had grieved.
We had rebuilt our lives around that loss.
But now, sitting on an airplane thousands of feet above the ground, I was staring at proof that everything I believed might have been a lie.
Then the flight attendant whispered:
“Sir… there’s one more thing.”
I looked at her.
She pointed toward the front of the plane.
“The man you were looking for didn’t leave the aircraft.”
My heart stopped.
“Then where is he?”
She looked at Emma.
Then at me.
And quietly said:
“He’s sitting in the cockpit.”
I couldn’t breathe.
But before I could react, the captain’s voice came over the intercom.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re beginning our descent.”
Then he paused.
And said something that made Emma grab my hand.
“Mr. Carter… if you’re listening…”
His voice cracked.
“…we need to talk about your wife.”
