Daniel trusts me. He won’t suspect anything.

Lauren had understood exactly what gave her access.

Family.

When Chloe was finally discharged, she stopped at our front door and refused to enter.

“Is Aunt Lauren inside?”

I crouched beside her.

“No.”

“Is she coming back?”

“No, sweetheart.”

She searched my face.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Police traced their earliest messages and found that he had repeatedly encouraged Lauren to talk about our finances. At first, his questions seemed casual—what Daniel did for work, whether we owned the house, and whether I earned more than my husband—but eventually he became interested in specific accounts and documents.

Lauren had answered him.

Then she began providing details he could not easily obtain elsewhere.

She told him when Daniel worked from home, where Chloe attended school, when my meetings usually ran late, and eventually that our garage camera was temporarily offline. She even mentioned the spare car fob after watching Daniel retrieve it one evening.

None of those details seemed dangerous individually.

Together, they created a map of our lives.

When detectives questioned Lauren again, she admitted the man had originally told her he could help solve her debts if she provided information about Daniel’s laptop. By the time he suggested entering our home, she was already financially and emotionally dependent on him.

That did not erase her responsibility.

Lauren had told him it was offline.

He asked about Daniel’s workdays, my late meetings, Chloe’s school schedule, and eventually the location of documents on Daniel’s laptop, while Lauren slowly stopped seeing those questions as warning signs.

That did not make her innocent.

She had still used the spare fob, entered our garage, followed the instructions, and fled after realizing Chloe had come home early.

When investigators confronted her with the full message history, Lauren finally admitted she had known the plan could hurt Daniel. She insisted she never intended for Chloe to become involved, but I could no longer accept intent as the only measure of what happened.

“You left after you knew she was inside.”

Lauren lowered her eyes.

“I panicked.”

“You could have called 911.”

“I know.”

That was the part she could never explain away. Whatever fear or manipulation brought her to our house, she still had one final opportunity to protect her niece and chose to run instead.

Chloe’s fear lasted much longer than her physical symptoms.
